'Wren stretched her neck, leaning back in the saddle and looked into the sky. A large bird flew high, circling in the currents. She wished she could fly and soar on the breeze, and watched the bird. It flew a little lower. It was completely the wrong shape and colour, and it circled like no bird she knew, wide angled swoops and passes. It lowered and the sun glowed off its colours, scarlet and emerald against burnished gold.
Wren stopped Barleyfire in wonder at the creature. There was grandeur in its movement, confident and light, though it looked so heavy. Then the creature shrieked and the noise went through Wren like a lightning strike. She came to her senses, filled with alarm, and pulled Barleyfire off the road. “Nyx!” she shouted. The little fox sprinted alongside the horse as they rushed off the road and into the trees.'
